Choreography Notes:
  • C = Cut

Parry Positions:     Distance or a step backwards is taken as preliminary defence to an attack.  The parry is taken at the conclusion of the attack. There is no need to push the attacker's sword away but simply take the parry position, rather than slapping swords and confusing the intention of the action.

  • 1 = prime
  • 2 = seconde
  • 3 = tierce
  • 4 = quarte
  • 5 = quinte " head parry"
  • 6 = sixte
  • 7 = septime
  • 8 = octave


  • Advance = a step forward - front foot first
  • Retreat = a step backwards - rear foot first
  • Passe avant = a step forward - rear foot first
  • Passe arriere = a step backwards - front foot first
  • Lunge

3 = tierce

5 = quinte " head parry"

4 = quarte

2 = seconde

1 = prime

                                            The duel scene between Cyrano and Valvert

                                       The fighting ballade begins, with Cyrano suiting action to words all through.







      Takes off hat, with a swirl,   --->                                                                                     I bare my head from crown to nape 

                                                                                                                                                    And slowly, leisurely reveal

      Takes off cape, with a  sweep,  --->                                                                                The fighting trim beneath my cape,  


      Draws rapier  - flexes rapier in hand --->                                                                                    Then finally I strip my steel.

                                                                                                                                         A thoroughbred from head to heel,

      Points rapier at Valvert ,  --->

      and points from head to heel,

                                                                                                                                                    disdainful of the rein or bit,

      Double half molinelo across chest   --->                                                                                    Tonight I draw a lyric wheel,


      Lunges.  ------>                                                                                                                  But, when the poem ends, I hit.


                                                                                                                                           Come be burst, you purple grape,

      P3,5,4,                                  <------     C3,5,4,

                                                                                                                                     Spurt out the juice beneath your peel.

      P1,5,2, & 1,                           <-------    C1,5,2, & 1

      and binds blade to the floor                     

                                                                                                                                    Jibber, and show, you rib boned ape,                        

      Cyrano ducks                        <------     slash to the head,

      and returns with his blade

      between Valvert's legs                                                                                                         The fat your folderols conceal.


                                                   <------    Feint P3, with  advance                     

      P1 and turn to                        <-------   C1 with lunge, pause.....then

      touch Valvert' on the rear                     

                                                  <------    reprises past Cyrano         

                                                                                                                                         Let's ring your bells - a pretty peal

      Cyrano turns and walks away,

                                                             Valvert, swishes his sword                                                  Is that a fly ? I'll see to it.

                                                              in a 2 full molinelos,    

      Cyrano P2 from reverse,         <------    and cuts to P2.

      turns, taking Valvert's

      blade to the floor .                                                                                                  Ah, soon you'll feel your blood congeal,

      P3, 5,4                                  <------   C3, 5,4

      Cyrano with arm straight & 

      point threatening deceives                 Valvert's large attempts to parry circular P3 (twice)   

      2 circles & a sweep to floor                then sweep to P2

       Lunge ..........>                                                                                                                 For, when the poem ends, I hit

                                                                                                                                          I need a rhyme to hold the shape

     C3,5, mol 5....>                                  P3,5,5                                                               gape, fish I'm going to wind the reel.

                                                                                                                                                  My rod is lusting for its rape,

                                                                                                                                      This sharp tooth slavers for its meal.

     and cut arm  ....>

                                                                                                                                       There, let it strike.  Ah, did you feel

                                                                                                                                                                The bite ? Not yet.

                                                                                                                           The vultures sit until the closing of the deal.

                                                                                                                                              The poem ends, and then I hit.

       Dodging                             <------     Mol. with one hand

                                                <------     Mol. with both hands


                                                                                                                                Prince, drop your weapon. Humbly kneel,

                                                                                                                                           Seek grace from God in requisite

                                                                                                                                      Repentance. Now - I stamp the seal.

                                                                                                                                                   The poem ended - and I hit.

        Cyrano kisses Valvert                       

        Counter-thrust under arm--->  <-- Valvert attacks C5
